What you can expect from Spravato Treatment near Millbury

How Do SPRAVATO Treatments Work Near Millbury?

April 29, 2024

Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) can be diagnosed if you tried two or more conventional antidepressants with no improvement in your quality of life. If you’ve been diagnosed with Treatment Resistant Depression, you may now experience relief with SPRAVATO®. This nasal spray has been demonstrated to help with symptoms of depression, such as suicidal thoughts and actions.

However, SPRAVATO is different than the traditional pill or liquid. It is a highly regulated FDA-approved medication that can only be dispensed by authorized SPRAVATO providers. What then can you expect during your SPRAVATO treatment Near Millbury?

SPRAVATO Can Only Be Given Through An FDA-Approved Provider

SPRAVATO can only be administered under direct medical oversight at a center certified in the SPRAVATO Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program. The Counseling Center At Millbury is proud to be a member of the program and an authorized SPRAVATO treatment provider. Before you start your care, we will inform you on the risks of SPRAVATO use, including sedation, dissociation, abuse, and misuse. We’ll also discuss common side effects, some of which take place directly after the dose and subside the same day.

Breaking Down SPRAVATO Treatments

Your first appointment at our certified SPRAVATO treatment center near Millbury is a consultation. You will undergo an evaluation to confirm you have treatment-resistant depression and if this medication is right for you. You could be eligible for SPRAVATO if you attempted more than two conventional depression treatments and did not see improvement in your depression symptoms.

Starting SPRAVATO Treatment Near Millbury

Your SPRAVATO treatment can commence as soon as your second appointment. But before you begin your regime, there are a few things to consider.

  • Secure a ride. You’ll need a lift to and from our location as you won’t be allowed to get behind the wheel or do anything that takes total alertness until the following day.
  • Bring something to do. As you take the treatment, you’ll be supervised for at least two hours. Bring a reading material, a fully charged phone, or another form of portable entertainment.
  • Guidelines for drinking and eating. Since SPRAVATO can cause nausea and vomiting in some clients, you shouldn’t consume food for at least two hours before and avoid liquids for 30 minutes prior.
  • Stay away from other nasal medications for at least one hour. If you take nasal corticosteroid or nasal decongestant medications, do so at a minimum of one hour prior your treatment.

Once you’ve made your preparations, you can start your SPRAVATO treatment. We will give you instructions you on how to take the nasal spray. You will self-administer the spray while under the direct care of our clinicians. We’ll monitor you for a minimum of two hours and let you know when it’s safe for you to return home.

For the first four weeks, you will take SPRAVATO two times a week. Once completed, we’ll review the effectiveness of your dosage and recommend further treatment that considers your symptoms, progress, and other factors.

What Does SPRAVATO Feel Like?

SPRAVATO provides a relaxed, calm state that helps alleviate your symptoms of TRD. The dosage does not cause sleepiness in most clients, but you may feel sleepy or doze off during your session. The tiredness or sleepiness you see should leave fairly quickly after the visit ends or during the monitored recovery time.

Other complications are possible, including dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or disorientation. However, many patients experience very few or no side effects at all.
